Listening The Forgotten Skill A SelfTeaching Guide 9780471015871 Business Communication Books Reviews
- I seriously can't tell you how much I gained from reading this book. We all think we listen but clearly after reading this and Why Don't We Listen Better by James C Peterson...could change the way you interact with others especially your family!!!
- Exercises in listening are the best part of this book. Should be read in tandem with The Lost Art of Listening by Dr. Michael Nichols. Overall is helpful though the exercises are time consuming and the writing is not exactly scintillating.
- I was very disappointed with this DVD. The author is the speaker. She should not be. Her voice was difficult to listen to for many reason. First she frequently sounded out of breath, like it was very hard for her to read. Also, there was a lot of background noise. Lastly at times she mumbled and her pronunciation of certain words was incorrect. I have listened to many non-fiction books on tape. I usually play them numerous times. This is the first time I did not finish one. The author needs to take her own advice and listen...listen to her own CD. If she did, then she would know, it is worth the cost for her to hire someone else to read!
- Although the concepts explained in this book will without a doubt make you a better listener, true listening requires quite a bit more that is offered in this textbook. True listening requires emotional maturity, patience, and an open mind - things that frankly, have to be in place before true listening can be achieved. If on the other hand you already possess the characteristics of an empathetic and patient person, then you probably already listen well to begin with and don't need this book anyway.. Still, there is knowledge to be gained from reading this and the skills taught and discussed within the chapters are applicable in everyday situations - at least to the extend that you will give the speaker the impression that you truly know how to listen.
- very good book. Easy to read but incredibly insightful. I'm a sales trainer and author and I recommend this book to my clients.
- Just as described, Perfect! Thank you!!
- I have the book not the audio version, I was a little disappointed but there is helpful material within. The bad is it spends too much time talking about why it's important to be a good listener, (we know that, that's why we bought a book on listening training) also the diagram charts were confusing and didn't make much sense; also the writer makes it seem like you always have to be extremely passive as the listener and the talker, which in the real world that does not always work. The good is there is material that explains how to focus to a high concentration level of listening can prove helpful.
I am going to look for another book to try. - I read this book as part of a graduate school program. It was absolutely relevant to my daily work life and provided numerous tools to help me improve my listening skills and become a more effective leader.
