Almost every couple faces a now what?” moment as their last kid moves out of the house. There’s a big empty nest looming over this new and uncertain stage in their lives.
David and Veronica James chose to look at this next phase of life as a beginning instead of an ending. Rather than staying put and facing the constant reminders of empty bedrooms and backseats, a plan began to develop to sell the nest and hit the highway. But could a homebody helicopter mom learn to let go of her heartstrings and house keys all at once?
Filled with a sense of adventure and humor, Going Gypsy is the story of a life after raising kids that is a celebration of new experiences. Pulling the rip cord on the daily grind, David and Veronica throw caution to the wind, quit their jobs, sell their house, put on their vagabond shoes, and go gypsy in a beat-up old RV found on eBay.
On a journey of over ten thousand miles along the back roads of America (and a hysterical, error-infused side trip into Italy), they conquer old fears, see new sights, reestablish bonds with family and friends, and transform their relationships with their three grown children from parent-child to adult-to-adult. Most importantly, they rediscover in themselves the fun-loving youngsters who fell in love three decades prior.

"Was wanting a book about the thought process of deciding on full time rving and some of the challenges and joys. Thought this might be a good read to convince my wife on the rv lifestyle. This book was a big disappointment! There is very little about rving and the lifestyle....it is almost entirely about the wife's psychological struggles of having an empty nest. After reading half of the book, I skimmed over many parts to get to those related to rving."

- This really isn't the narrative you want if you're looking for a book about discovering the world in an RV. Most of the book was about the kids and visiting relatives, not any sort of real adventure. I finished it only because I kept hoping for snippets of excitement on the back roads of America and for connections with other road travelers. That did not happen. If you are looking for a book about family dynamics, this is the book for you, but if you are searching for a "Travels with Charley" a "Blue Highways" or a "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance," you probably need to keep searching.
- Was wanting a book about the thought process of deciding on full time rving and some of the challenges and joys. Thought this might be a good read to convince my wife on the rv lifestyle. This book was a big disappointment! There is very little about rving and the lifestyle....it is almost entirely about the wife's psychological struggles of having an empty nest. After reading half of the book, I skimmed over many parts to get to those related to rving.
- An enjoyable read of the heart/head struggle of family leaving home, the evolving idea of giving up possessions, then taking to the road in an RV to catch up with extended family in the USA, all while enjoying the sights along the way. It many ways it was a return to the way of life BC (before children) when the heart ruled the head of a very young couple, with most people not giving the relationship much chance of surviving the years. The perspective of both parents was an inspired idea in writing this story, acknowledging a mother's internal struggle as the last of her brood leave home and the viewing of events through two pairs of eyes, not necessarily seeing life and events in the same way. Especially poignant for the mother given her parenting style, as her husband was absent for much of the time through his music commitments.
What stopped me from giving a five-star review? I felt that while there were lengthy descriptions of the internal wrangling of heart and head, there was not a similar emphasis when it came to descriptions of some of the roads driven or places visited. For a reader who does not live in the USA, I would have enjoyed a little more geographic description. I felt towards the end of the story, it became more of a summation of events quickly passing by, rather than a little education. Many would argue that memoir is not about education however, I dispute that argument in that memoir is often what influences some of the choices that a reader will make about visiting a particular place or country. That aside, it did not stop my enjoyment of the struggle the parents, and particularly the mother, faced on their continuing life journey as Gypsies. - I am actually not part of Veronica and James' demographic. You may not be either. Don't let that stop you from buying this book - this is a great read and a lot of fun. I have no children, am not married, don't even drive, and still I was right there from cover to cover. This is a funny, poignant story, well-told and engaging. It reminds me of Jan Kerr's The Grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank and any of Erma Bombeck's books. Veronica and James, while gently poking fun at themselves, also remind us of how funny - and sometimes ridiculous - life can be. You might not put this down except when you're laughing so hard that you need a break.
- This book is full of fun, adventure, humor and heart. A treatise on how to live life to the fullest after the children have left the nest. David, The Gypsy, traveling with his band, and Veronica, The Nester, have now combined their specialties and become the GypsyNesters with their own wonderful blog for those who are travel adventurers and also for those of us who vicariously live through them. For the most part, David and Veronica do not take themselves too seriously, writing in a style that is informative, sometimes irreverent, open and honest and often “laugh out loud funnyâ€. Anyone who has ever been a parent can particularly relate to David’s description of the “carrot warsâ€. This book is in part an autobiography, a travelogue, a parenting guide, an encouragement to face your fears and an example of how the authors have made their marriage work for the long haul. But mostly it is a love story…… loving to travel , loving your family, and loving each other. This is the stuff that dreams are made of.
- I enjoy reading what other couples go through in a season that all parents face. It's an often brushed over time of life that can be challenging after devoting 20+ years to children and everyone handles it differently. The description promised an account of what it's like emotionally after successfully launching young adult kids, and how to reconnect with life as a couple and their account measured up in a fun and honest way. I liked their decision to get an RV, visit places and people they hadn't seen for years, and they showed how it's possible, even without a ton of money, to try new things and have a fresh start. The RV trip and people they met was a hoot.
- When I mention to friends how much I emjoyed Going Gypsy, they ask if they can borrow my copy. I say 'no way!' For one thing, I had such fun meeting David and Veronica at an event in March, where they 'engraved' my copy, so it's rather special to me, and thus, 'unlendable'. For another thing, this book is so good it deserves to be bought, not borrowed. If you're an Empty Nester like me, you'll identify with this dyamic duo big time. But even better, you'll be positively inspired as you read their story, because they are so inspiringly positive (!) Enough already with the Downer Boomers! Dig into Gypsy Nester like I did (I devoured it in one day), and you will be uplifted as well as entertained. And you won't want to loan your copy to anyone, either.
