Works Of Mercy Fritz Eichenberg Robert Ellsberg 9781570755521 Books Reviews

  • When I was born in 1950, my parents already had the box set of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre published in 1943. I remember being mesmerized by the illustrations but my mother would not let me look at the books because she felt they were to scary. So when I finally was able to read them and I decided them! And the wood cut illustrations were with me forever. And recently something jogged my memory and I looked for books/prints done by Fritz Eichenberg. This book really expresses who he was. I recommend this book highly and "A Child's Christmas in Wales" is wonderful. And of course if you have children (or adults) who haven't read the Bronte's his is the only one for them to read.
  • The woodcuts in this book are beautiful reproductions of Eichenberg's many works. Eichenberg created these woodcuts to illustrate various religious themes that reflected his views on caring for the poor, the homeless, the disadvantaged and those victims affected by violence, injustice and wars. There is significant commentary on the meaning and message he was trying to express in his woodcuts. The illustrations and commentaries provide the reader with ample reflection on the artist's cry for compassion, justice and peace toward the many victims he saw in his vision of the world.
  • I heard Fritz Eichenberg mentioned while watching the pope's visit to the U.S. on TV, and wanted to learn more. This book contains not only the woodcarvings, but the stories behind them, of Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker movement. A thoughtful and thought-provoking work.
  • This book contains the artwork of Fritz Eichenberg, much of which appeared in the Catholic Worker newspaper. The Gospel calls us to reach out to the poor and needy in our midst. Fritz Eichenberg's images takes the gospel from the pages of the Bible to our daily lives.
  • I have looked at this book over and over. The Eichenberg prints are wonderful and plentiful and the quotes by Dorothy Day and others are inspiring. This is really a beautiful coffee table type book.
  • Many thanks!
